SRINAGAR : Traffic on the Srinagar-Leh national highway, connecting the Ladakh region with Kashmir valley was resumed today after remaining suspended due to landslides, triggered by cloudburst. However, fresh vehicles on the highway will be allowed only after all stranded vehicles are cleared, a traffic police official told UNI.
He said traffic on the highway was suspended yesterday after overnight rain and cloudburst triggered landslides at Fish point and Drass.
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway immediately pressed into service sophisticated machine and men to clear the landslides and mudslides.
Majority of landslides and mudslides have been removed and traffic was restored on the highway, he said, adding that vehicles, stranded on the highway have been allowed to move towards their respective destinations.
Due to closure of the highway, Amarnath pilgrims were also affected as yatris could not move towards Baltal base camp from Sumbal and Manigam transit camp.
The members of the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) have expressed concern over the frequent closure of the Baltal road due to landslides and mudslides. Meanwhile, the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway and historic Mughal road, linking Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region remained open.
However, only light vehicles besides heavy vehicles carrying Amarnath pilgrims are allowed to ply from both sides on Kashmir highway. Other heavy vehicles will continue to ply on alternate days on the highway till further orders. (AGENCIES)
