Highway connecting Ladakh with Kashmir closed

SRINAGAR :  The National Highway, connecting the Ladakh region with the Kashmir valley, remained closed due to avalanches for the second day today.
Official sources said traffic on the Srinagar-Leh national highway was stopped due to avalanches yesterday in which six people, including three drivers and a conductor, were injured at Shaitan Nallh between Zojila and Meenmarg. The injured were hospitalised.
There was threat of more avalanches because of fresh rains in the area, they said.
A large number of vehicles, including those carrying passengers, are stranded on both sides of the Zojila, they  said.
However, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway has pressed into service sophisticated machines and men to put through the highway.
A traffic police official said traffic will be allowed only when a green signal is received from BRO and traffic officials posted at different places on the highway.
This is the second time that the highway has been closed since it reopened early this month after remaining closed for six winter months due to snowfall.
