Highway connecting Ladakh with Kashmir closed due to landslides

SRINAGAR :  The national highway, connecting the Ladakh region with Kashmir valley was closed today due to landslides and fresh snowfall, a traffic police official said.
He told  that there was few inches of snowfall in Zojila, Meenmarg and Drass area on the highway triggering landslides at several places.
There was slippery road conditions, he said adding that efforts were being made to remove the landslides by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintainance of the highway.
Official sources said a large number of vehicles, including those carrying passengers are  stranded on both sides of the Zojila pass.
The highway reopened only early this month after remaining closed for about five winter months due to accumulation of ten to 15 feet of snow on the road, particularly between Sonamarg-Zojila-Menmarg and Drass, the second coldest place in the world after Siberia. (AGENCIES)
