Sir,
Refer news item ‘Historical places to be developed under heritage tourism’ DE June 7.
The decision of the State Government to bring ancient and historical places under the ambit of heritage tourism is a step in right direction.
It is matter of pride that the landscape of J&K State is dotted with numerous historical sites with which the history of this State is related closely. However, it is disconcerting that this heritage is crumbling with the passage of time. Call it Government or public apathy, we have let this wealth die a slow death. The people do not seem bothered about their decay. Rather, they have become mute spectators of losing this heritage and history.
The successive Governments have never bothered much for their upkeep. No funds are allotted for this purpose. Usually, Government passes buck to other agencies for their preservation. There is great scope for heritage tourism in all the three provinces of the State-Ladakh, Kashmir and Jammu, provided efforts are made in this direction.
There is an urgent need to preserve this heritage not only for tourism purposes but also for its historical and cultural values.
Yours etc…
