Srinagar : Kashmir valley experienced season’s heavy snowfall today forcing the authorities to close 300 kilometre long Jammu-Srinagar National Highway for traffic.
Residents this morning woke up to a thick blanket of snow and it is still snowing and so far around six inches snow has accumulated in Srinagar.
Reports from North Kashmir’s Baramulla district said that around one feet of snow has accumulated in the town and adjoining areas.
The heavy snowfall in Jawahar Tunnel and Patnitop areas has led to closure of the National Highway for traffic. Hundreds of trucks have got stranded on the National Highway due to snowfall.
A traffic official said here that it is snowing in Jawahar Tunnel and Patnitop areas of the Highway forcing the authorities to close the highway for traffic.
Children in Srinagar and other parts of Kashmir valley were seen playing with snow as it the season’s heavy snowfall. Last week around one inch snow was recorded in Srinagar.
A MET official said here that the wet weather will continue for next 24 hours and it will bring more snow in Kashmir valley and hills.
The electricity in majority of the areas has went off due to the snowfall. Majority of the hill roads are closed as heavy snowfall has accumulated on the roads.
