JAMMU, May 12: The International Nurses’ Day was celebrated today by various health institutions across the State to commemorate birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, pioneer of modern nursing.
To celebrate the occasion, Jammu Nurses’ Association organized a function at Government Medical College Jammu’s auditorium. Minister for Health and Medical Education, Bali Bhagat, was the chief guest on the occasion. While speaking on the occasion, Bali Bhagat said that nurses are frontline healthcare providers, who at times make important decisions to save the lives of the patients.
The Minister also distributed mementoes to the nurses and other staff for their outstanding contribution in discharging their duties.
Principal GMC, Dr Sunanda Raina, Mission Director, NHM, Dr Mohan Singh, senior faculty members, Medical Superintendents of GMC and SMGS Hospital, Dr Romesh Gupta and Dr Dara Singh and a large number of nurses, paramedics were present on the occasion.
A function to commemorate birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, was also organized at SKIMS in Srinagar. The inaugural function was followed by seminar focused on this year’s theme – A voice to lead to achieve sustainable development goals. Director and EOSG, SKIMS, Dr A G Ahangar, who was the chief guest on the occasion, paid rich tributes to Florence Nightingale.
Joint Medical Superintendent and In-charge Nursing Superintendent, Dr Farooq Jan said SKIMS patient care system has come a long way and has shown resilience in every challenging situation and disastrous circumstances.
A function to celebrate International Nurses’ Day was organized in the auditorium of Government Hospital, Gandhinagar (Jammu), where besides Nurses of the hospital, students of ANMT Nursing School, Government Hospital Gandhinagar along with students of Bee Enn College of Nursing participated.
The programme started with lightening of lamp in front of picture of Florence Nightingale by the Matron Vaishhnoo Devi along with Dr Madhuri Slathia, Medical Superintendent, Dr Arun Sharma, Deputy Medical Superintendent, and other staff. Matron was later garlanded and crowned by the Medical Superintendent and mementos presented to all prominent Nurses. Later, a cake which was specially made for the occasion was cut by all the nurses together and a get together function organized.
As part of the celebration of International Nurses’ Day, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi College of Nursing (SMVDCoN), Kakryal, organised several programmes during the past five days which concluded today. Maj Gen SK Sharma (Retd), Member of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) and Chairman of Governing Body of the SMVDCoN, was the chief guest on this occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, Maj Gen Sharma threw light on the celebration of International Nurses’ Day and highlighted the important role of nursing in the field of health care. Ajeet Kumar Sahu, CEO, SMVDSB, who was the guest of honour, dwelt on the theme of this year’s International Nurses’ Day which is “Nurses: A Voice to Lead, Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals”.
Dr. Shailla Cannie, Principal of the College of Nursing, in her welcome address gave details of the programmes while the vote of thanks was delivered by Artika Katal, a student of second semester of the college.
On International Nurses Day, Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) today said that nurses in Kashmir lack training in compassion which is an essential component of nursing care. In a statement issued here, the DAK president, Dr Nisar-ul-Hassan said that absence of training in compassion and empathy is responsible for poor attitude of nurses towards patient care. “We need technically competent nurses but at the same time they should demonstrate the virtues of compassion and empathy. He said there is an urgent need to focus on a culture of compassion and empathy at all levels in nurse education, training and recruitment.
