Health Centres sans docs

Sir,
This is in reference to editorial D.E. dated 25th March. It is unfortunate that the doctors after being qualified at the huge expense of taxpayer’s money are reluctant to serve in rural areas. This is the main reason of shortage of doctors in rural areas. The Government is also responsible for creating this situation. After the doctors obtain posting orders for their posting in rural areas, they engage themselves in getting the orders modified by using the political influence or by other means and many of them get it managed successfully. If however, one fails to get his transfer orders modified, he prefers to remain on unauthorised leave on one pretext or the other as there is no strict action from the Government. A few who join choose to remain mostly absent from duty. The purpose of getting the government service is not only to earn living but also to serve society of which we are a part and parcel. No doubt, there is also shortage of medicos in medical department, the right of the rural population for having access to the proper medical facilities cannot be taken away. The Government should not leave the suffering people at the will of the doctors and their postings in the rural areas should be ensured and strictly monitored.
Yours etc……
