SRINAGAR, Aug 4: Handwara police have arrested a man, impersonating as an Army doctor and a scientist with National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), who has married at least six women, extorted money before abandoning them.
Tahir Ahmad Bukhari, a resident of Waskura village in Handwara area of North Kashmir’s Kupwara district, was arrested by Jammu and Kashmir Police, Handwara, from Maharastra.
Senior Superintendent of Police Handwara, Ghulam Jeelani, told Excelsior that Bukhari alias Dr Syed Ishan Bukhari, was arrested on a complaint filed by one Manzoor Ahmad of Handwara who alleged that the accused exhorted huge amounts of money from him.
Manzoor Ahmad, in his complaint, said that he met Bukhari three months ago on social media and he posed as an Army officer belonging to Odisha. “He said that he was in touch with him and one day he called him and offered help in the name of God in recruiting a group of people. He asked for their documents and their photographs,” Manzoor said in the complaint, adding that he collected documents of several persons and provided it to him.
“After few days he asked for Rs 15000 from each applicant as processing charges and provided account number for depositing the money. I collected the amount and deposited in the account number provided by him. Then there was no contact and as I was worried I filed the complaint with the police”, he said.
SSP Jeelani said that he formed a Special team headed by SDPO Handwara Shabir Khan to look into the case. He said that they contacted their counterparts in Maharashtra and arrested Bukhari. Later a police team from Handwara Police Station rushed to Maharashtra who brought the accused to Handwara for further investigations.
The SSP Jeelani said that investigation conducted so far has revealed that he married 6 women, one in Odisha, two from Maharashtra, one from Barely UP, one from Srinagar and another from Handwara and later abandoned them after exhorting money. He was also in conversation with six more girls from different States and was planning to marry them.
The senior police officer said that Bukhari had two Aadhaar cards and had managed to get forged neuro surgery MBBS certificates from Canada, Egypt and London when his qualification is only 10th standard and has failed in 12th standard.
On the basis of the forged certificates, he was impersonating as a doctor and even practiced as a doctor at several places under famous doctors from AIIMS hospital Delhi and Rainbow hospital, Pune.
Police said that he was treating a cancer patient of Barely few months ago in his clinic. However, the patient later died.
His wife from Barely, who is a journalist told police that Bukhari exhorted Rs 7 lakh and gold worth Rs 3 lakhs before abandoning her. She said that they met through matrimonial site in 2014 and after one year, they got married. “He introduced himself a doctor with Army and during the course of time, he would torture me and threaten to share personal videos on internet if I reveal it to anybody”, she told police. “I have filed many complaints against him but police in UP and Delhi never arrested him as he was impersonating as an Army doctor”, she told Police.
The SSP said that so far five women who he has abandoned contacted the police and narrated their ordeal. “A woman from Rajasthan told police that he extorted Rs 4 lakh from her”, he said.
Police have also recovered video from him in which he was posing as a Pir Baba in Maharashtra and collecting money from general public. Police said that he used to visit famous shrines and sing Qawwali and collect money.
SSP Jeelani said that he revealed that he has purchased the fake MBBS degree for Rs 6 lakhs. He said that they are in touch with their counterparts in other States where he has conducted the crimes.
