SRINAGAR, Dec 30: Jammu and Kashmir High Court today directed the Superintendent District Jail Udhampur to take steps for providing all the facilities including medical to the jail inmates within the purview of jail manual.
Justice MH Attar in an application filed by High Court Bar Association directed the Superintendent of Udhampur Jail to take steps in this regard and submit report.
Court ordered the registry to serve the order and application to the Jailer immediately so that he shall ensure that the inmates of the jail are treated properly and provided all kinds of facilities as are permissible in accordance with the jail manual.
Court said the jail authorities are duty bound to comply with the mandate of article 21 of the constitution “The Superintendent must know that the inmates of the jail have the constitutional rights enshrined under article 21 of the constitution of India”, court order reads.
Bar Association had moved an application submitting therein that the jail authorities are not providing facilities to the jail inmates as they are supposed to provide them (inmates) under jail manual and instead are treating them poorly.
Court also directed Sessions Judge Udhampur to visit the Jail and file his report after interacting with the inmates of the jail. “Report be filed within week’s time after copy of this order and application is served upon him”, court said.
