Srinagar, Dec 17: The State High Court today directed the Government to devise a mechanism for providing compensation to the flood victims of last year who have not been provided any assistance so far.
The Division Bench of Jammu and Kashmir High Court comprising Justice Hasnain Masoodi and Justice Ali Mohammad Magrey directed: “The mechanism at district level be devised for addressing grievances of the flood victims of September 2014 who have not received compensation against their damaged properties so far”.
The direction has been passed after the court was informed that many people whose properties suffered damage in the floods have not been compensated by the Government so far.
Appearing counsel for State Tasaduq H Khawaja (AAG) submitted before the court that the flood related grievances are looked into by the concerned Deputy Commissioners. The court urged the Government to put in place a proper mechanism for addressing the grievances of the flood victims.
“The State Government was expected to have mechanism in place, so that flood affected people with such grievances would approach the concerned authorities and get their grievances addressed on strength of the material they have in their support”, DB said while hearing a Public Interest Litigation on rehabilitation of 2014 flood victims.
The court directed the concerned authorities to issue a Government order in this regard within 10 days. “And notify the order through print and electronic media so that all affected people are left with no grievance”, said the bench.
Court said that once the mechanism is in place and any aggrieved person approaches the concerned authorities they should consider and take decision on such complaints within 10 days from the date when such complaint is received.
