POONCH, Aug 1: Shamsher Hakla Poonchi a prominent Gujjar leader and intellectual of J&K, has urged the Government to settle the problems of Gujjars and Bakerwals of the UT.
In a statement issued here, today while expressing concern over the plight of the nomadic Gujjars and Bakerwals living in far flung and remote areas, he said that they are not getting proper benefit of welfare schemes launched for the other weaker sections of the society.
Maintaining that their culture is totally different than other communities, he said special; attention needs to be paid for their upliftment and development.
Hakla said that the half settled and unsettled tribes of Gujjar Bakarwals along with their belongings, families and cattle goes to the higher reaches for grazing their cattle for six months every year.
He regretted that the mobile schools opened by Government for the education of these children which along with the nomads shift to higher reaches in Summer have abandoned this practice which has affected the education of these children.
Many mobile schools have been converted to stationary schools of J&K Government and nowadays only few mobile schools are left due to which these people are far behind in the field of education.
Hakla urged to the Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha to frame a strong policy for ensuring the proper functioning of mobile schools in Jammu and Kashmir for half-settled and unsettled nomadic people.
He also urged the Government of India for opening of boarding schools on pattern of Navodya Vidalya for Gujjar-Bakarwal girls and boys students in all districts of J&K Union-Territory and establishment of Tribal University in J&K.
