SRINAGAR, Aug 28: Peoples Democratic Front (PDF) president and former Minister, Hakeem Mohammad Yaseen on Thursday expressed deep grief and anguish over the large-scale loss of lives due to the unprecedented rainfall, cloudbursts and flash floods in Jammu province.
In a handout he stated that the tragic incident, in which at least 41 people, including a large number of Vaishno Devi pilgrims, lost their lives in Reasi and Doda districts between Tuesday and Wednesday, is a grim reminder of how vulnerable J&K remains to natural calamities.
Extending condolences to the bereaved families, Yaseen prayed for the speedy recovery of all those who were injured in these natural calamities.
“It is shocking that even after the horrifying memories of 2014 Kashmir floods we have not learned any lesson,” he maintained adding that disaster management in Jammu and Kashmir largely exists on papers only and is seldom visible on the ground.
He also demanded that the Centre should extend immediate relief and compensation to the affected families, particularly the pilgrims who came from outside States and lost their lives here.
