NEW DELHI : Mr Harishankar Brahma today assumed the charge as Chief Election Commissioner of India. Mr Brahma assumed the office at a brief ceremony at the Nirvachan Sadan here. Election Commissioner Sayed Nasim Ahmad Zaidi and other high brass were present. Mr Brahma–the 19th CEC-, succeeds V S Sampath who retired yesterday.
In his opening remarks, Mr Brahma said, “Our top priority is to make the Delhi Assembly polls all perfect.” Born on April 19, 1950, Mr Brahma–a 1975 batch Andhra Pradesh cadre IAS, retired as Union Power Secretary in 2011. He will hold the post of CEC till April 18 this year. Mr Brahma is the second officer from the North Eastern region who holds the post of the CEC.
