Sir,
This has reference to the news item, ‘Insurance, banking, telecom, biz class airfare costlier’ DE May 20.
The GST Council deserves appreciation for finalising tax rates under which education and health care have been exempted. These two item are already beyond the reach of common man; further taxation would have made them inaccessible to poor people. As India does not have a National Health Insurance for all its citizens, it has allowed the private sector become the dominant healthcare provider in the country. The private sector, as a rule finds its benefit first, then comes the service. It is only the privileged class that can seek treatment from private sector. People below poverty line, or even middle class people hesitate to seek private services. They are mostly dependent on Government sector.
Same is the case with education sector. The mushrooming of private schools has revolutionised education system in the country, but this too is a costly affair. The common people are bearing the brunt of this education as they have no option to go anywhere. The public education sector is not catching up with private sector in providing quality education to students. Result, private sector is fleecing parents. Additional taxes would have further broken the back of these people.
Yours etc…..
