Srinagar, Sept 6: Militants today hurled a grenade towards Police Station Shopian in South Kashmir which, however, didn’t explode and was later defused by the Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) while clashes erupted in Bellow village of Pulwama district during a cordon and search operation.
Militants at around 4.30 pm today lobbed a grenade towards Shopian Police Station which fell near its gate but didn’t explode. Police immediately summoned BDS and it was defused without any damage to life or property. Later, a search operation was launched in nearby areas against the attackers but no one was arrested.
Meanwhile, stone-throwing clashes erupted in Bellow village of neighbouring Pulwama district today after security forces launched a cordon and search operation in the area. The security forces including Army, police’s Special Operation Group (SOG) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) launched the cordon and search operation in Bellow after receiving an input about the presence of two-three militants in the villages.
As the search operation was started, local residents came out of their houses and pelted stones on security personnel. The police retaliated by firing teargas canisters and the clashes between the two sides continued for several hours. The operation was later called off as no militant was found in the area. However, five persons were injured in clashes.
Militants tonight night attacked a minority police post in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir to loot weapons. However, the attempt was foiled by the policemen who retaliated by opening fire on the attackers.
An official said that militants attacked the police guard in Panzer village of the district. He said policemen retaliated and the militants fled away. “A major weapon snatching bid was foiled by the cops,” he said.
