Govt to consider linking of Swachh Bharat works with MGNREGA

NEW DELHI, Apr 22:  Government will consider scope of linking works of ‘Swachh Bharat’ mission with MGNREGA and to encourage the construction of bio-toilets under the campaign, the Lok Sabha was informed today. Speaking during Question Hour, Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu said, ”We will discuss the issue of linking of two projects with Rural Development Ministry and other agencies concerned for facilitating certain activities, including some works related to construction of toilets.
He said the Government would also consider for some additional resources for construction of toilets in difficult and rocky areas. “I understand the amount fixed for toilets is not sufficient but this is prescribed keeping in mind of availability of funds.” Mr Naidu added that the funds was being arranged by seeking role and participation  of corporate groups, public and local units. The Minister said, “Water supply and maintenance of toilets are the other areas of concern, particularly in rural areas, and that are to be addressed by the Government.
Welcoming the suggestion of construction of bio-toilets under the clean India campaign from Saugata Roy of the Trinamool Congress, Mr Naidu said bio-toilets would be encouraged in the mission. In bio-toilets, human excreta is treated and decomposed by bacterial culture. (UNI)
