Govt simplifies procedure for seeking financial assistance by refugees

JAMMU, Feb 12: In a major decision, the Government has simplified the procedure for seeking financial assistance by the left over Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) displaced families of 1947, 1965 and 1971.
The financial assistance of Rs 5.50 lakh per family was announced by the Government of India for the PoJK displaced families of 1947, 1965 and 1971. Though large number of such families obtained benefit of the Prime Minister’s Package yet several families remained deprived of the same due to the ‘complex procedure’.
Recently, the issue was debated in the Administrative Council headed by Lieutenant Governor Girish Chandra Murmu and after deliberations the proposal mooted by the Department of Disaster Management, Relief and Rehabilitation and Reconstruction was cleared.
As per the orders issued by the department in the backdrop of the decision taken by the Administrative Council, the applicant refugee family of PoJK-1947 now has to give any one document out of seven for proving credential as PoJK displaced person and only one document out of nine for proving his current residential status in J&K.
Most importantly, the applicant need not to produce any old voter list and even the latest voter list or electricity bill or latest ration card is sufficient to establish residential status in Jammu and Kashmir.
The process has been simplified to enable the displaced families of 1947-PoJK as well as Chhamb families of 1965 and 1971 to easily claim their financial assistance.
It is pertinent to mention here that the applicants need to apply before their Deputy Commissioners if he/she happens to be Chhamb refugee of 1965/1971 and if he/she is 1947 refugee, there is a need to apply before the Provincial Rehabilitation Officer (PRO) Jammu.
Out of an estimated 36,000 families which were to be covered, the Government has already covered 30,000 odd families and remaining 6000 families are targeted to be covered in next 45 days.
