SRINAGAR, Dec 9: Expressing his serious concern over worst power crisis in the Valley, Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) chief GA Mir today said that the State Government under the garb of unrest was punishing people for no fault of theirs.
In a statement issued to press here, Mir said, “Despite harsh winter Kashmir valley is going through worst power crisis in the recent years. Even in metered areas, power supply remains off for at least six hours in a day. The condition in non-metered areas is even worse”.
JKPCC chief said, “Winter is not new in Kashmir and neither is decrease in power generation. It was always there, but why this year the curtailment schedule is so long? It seems that under the garb of unrest PDP-led Government is punishing the people of Kashmir for no fault of theirs,” Mir said.
He asked the Government to come clear on the figures of power import from the Northern Grid this year. “Every year the State has to buy more electricity from the Northern Grid as local generation decreases during winter months. Why wasn’t the State Government ready this year,” PCC chief asked.
“While common consumers are bearing the brunt of the unscheduled power cuts, it is the student community who has to suffer the most, as their annual exams are going on these days. The Power Development Department (PDD) is taking consumers for a ride which is not justified,” he added.
Mir said that the Government has left the people of Kashmir to fend for themselves in this harsh winter. “Not only power crisis, but also the shortage of ration and increase in its prices has hit the common man hard.
He further said that the recent price hike of ration reflects total failure of the coalition Government to perform basic duties towards the people.
Mir said Congress Party believes in constructive opposition, but PDP-BJP coalition was exploiting people by playing with their emotions on the agenda of good governance.
