Srinagar, June 6: Government today directed Home Secretary to probe the use of alleged abusive language by a senior police officer posted in South Kashmir’s Pahalgam area of Anantnag district against Member of Legislative Council (MLC) Dr Bashir Ahmad Veeri and the Upper House.
The direction to the Home Secretary was passed by Minister for Revenue, Relief and Rehabilitation Basharat Bukhari in the Legislative Council after the MLC Dr Veeri alleged that Station House Officer (SHO) Pahalgam used abusive language not only against him but also House.
“I was in Pahalgam yesterday and I saw some persons wearing uniform of ‘Tourist Police’ fleecing visitors and tourists. The people there also brought the issue in my notice and told me that the ‘Tourist Police’ functions under SHO Pahalgam. So, when I approached the SHO and revealed my identity, he not only abused and misbehaved with me but also abused the House,” said Dr Veeri in the House.
Dr Veeri, who is Opposition National Conference MLC, sought strict action against the SHO and said ‘we will bring it under the Privilege Committee’. The other NC MLCs including Showkat Hussain Ganai also demanded action against SHO.
“Home Secretary is sitting here. He should investigate the matter and submit report tomorrow,” said Bukhari, the Revenue Minister. Also, the Chairman of the House, Haji Anayat Ali, urged Dr Veeri to write to Privilege Committee for action against the SHO.
