Govt official booked for taking Rs 5 lakh bribe

SRINAGAR: The State Vigilance Organisation (SVO) of Jammu and Kashmir today booked a Government official for allegedly abusing his official position and taking a bribe of around Rs 5 lakh in Baramulla district.

The action came in the wake of a complaint by Jahangir Ahmad Bhat, proprietor of M/S Jahangir Steel Industries, against the then Executive Engineer, PMGSY Showkat Hussain Koul for demand and acceptance of illegal gratification, an SVO official said.

The official said an inquiry into the matter showed that during execution/construction of road from Salamabad to Gowhalan Stage-II Phase-IV under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) in tehsil Uri of the north Kashmir district in 2010, Koul, along with his friend Ajaz Ahmad Kamili, accepted an amount of Rs 5,90,000 on various occasions from the complainant.

Accordingly, a case was registered against Koul and Kamili and further investigations taken up, the official added. (AGENCIES)
