JAMMU, July 11: Intellectual Property India, The Patent Office, Government of India has granted patent to Patentee Dr Abdul Hamid Bhat and Dr Nitin Langer for an invention entitled “A Novel Method and System of Capacitor Voltage Balancing of a Three-Phase Neutral-Point Clamped Bi-Directional Rectifier”
The patent, vide Patent No. 340907 for a term of 20 years, is of technical importance for medium and high power industries using Multilevel Power Electronics based converters for control of electric drives. AC/DC power converters are extensively used in various applications like power supplies, DC motor drives, front-end converters in adjustable-speed AC drives, HVDC transmission, SMPSs, UPSs, utility interface with non-conventional energy sources and power supplies for telecommunications systems, aerospace, etc. Power converters are an enabling technology for industrial processes powered by electric drive systems. Multilevel converters are considered as one of the industrial solutions for high dynamic performance and power-quality demanding applications.
The capacitor voltage unbalancing in neutral-point clamped converters has become a burning issue since 1970 and has invited an intensive research to address this problem. Since modulation is the heart of converter, the development of optimum strategies to implement this process has been the subject of intensive international research for over four decades and continues to evolve in many directions as a result of increasing concern over power quality of source side waveform. These multilevel converters are complex to modulate because of large number of available switching alternatives and can impose massive computational overhead if not carefully optimized. The said invention provides one such optimized solution to address this issue in effective and efficient manner.
Abdul Hamid Bhat received the Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the National Institute of Technology Srinagar, Kashmir and did the Master’s and Ph D degrees from the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, India, in 2001 and 2007, respectively. He is currently working as Professor & Head in the Department of Electrical Engineering, National Institute of Technology Srinagar.
Dr Nitin Langer received the Graduation degree in Electrical Engineering from the Manipal Institute of Technology, Mangalore University, India, in 1995 and did the M Tech degree (Gold Medal) from Manipal Institute of Technology, MAHE University, India, in 2003 and Ph D degree from the Department of Electrical Engineering, National Institute of Technology Srinagar, Kashmir in 2014. He is currently working as Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, MBS college of Engineering & Technology Jammu. He was associated with Philips India Ltd (lighting division) during his stay in industry, taught for 19 years holding various academic and administrative positions and took up various design and consultancy projects.
