JAMMU, Oct 19: The UT Government is contemplating to bring a law for regulating installation and safe working of elevators in high-rise buildings in the Union Territory.
The administration of the UT has set the ball rolling for enacting a legislation that would require builders and owners to comply with certain regulations before and after installation of lifts and escalators in buildings.
To begin with, the Roads & Buildings Department has set-up a high-level committee to formulate the draft for enactment of “J&K Lifts and Escalators Act”. The proposed law would regulate installation, maintenance and safe working of lifts/escalators in the UT.
According to an order, the R&B Department has constituted a three-member committee to prepare draft Act for regulation/ maintenance and safe working of lifts and escalators in J&K
The committee comprises Chief Engineer Public Works (Roads & Buildings) Department, Chief Engineer Mechanical & Hospital Engineering Department, Kashmir and Superintending Engineer Mechanical & Hospital Engineering Department, Jammu.
As per its terms of reference, the panel shall prepare the draft after taking a cue from similar enactments in other states/UTs.
The committee has been directed to submit its report by October 31, 2023, the order said.
The committee has been set-up after the Department of Law, Justice & Parliamentary Affairs and Department of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs wrote to the R&B Department on the matter.
