Govt hiding its NSO survey on consumer expenditure, alleges Rahul

NEW DELHI: Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Friday alleged that the Narendra Modi government was hiding a survey by the National Statistical Office, which reportedly stated that the country’s consumer spending falls after four decades.
“Modinomics stinks so bad, the Government has to hide its own reports”, tweeted Mr Gandhi, while a sharing a news report, which was quoted the NSO survey.
The former Congress president’s criticism comes a day after a news report claimed that the NSO survey report was to be published in June 2019 but that the Modi government withheld it due to ‘adverse’ findings.
The Congress party also criticised the government on the issue and said that “The government. was forced to hide the recent NSO report that stated household expenditure has fallen for the first time in 40 years. Experts suggest a dip in consumption indicates rising poverty and dip in food expenditure indicates rising malnutrition”.
According to the report, the “average amount of money spent by a person in a month fell by 3.7 per cent in 2017-2018”, due to lack of rural demand as people reduced their expenditure on food and non-food items.
Mr Gandhi and the Congress party have been continuously attacking the Modi government over the state of the economy, by saying that the government is not taking adequate measures to address the economic slowdown.
