NEW DELHI, Dec 8: The government proposes to convert old airport terminals into cargo terminals and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has prepared a roadmap for the development of Common User Domestic Air Cargo (CUDAC) facility in a phased manner, Minister of State for Civil Aviation Mahesh Sharma informed the Lok Sabha today.
The AAI has identified 24 airports for the purpose, which include old airport buildings at Jaipur, Goa, Mangalore, Trichi, Trivandrum, Madurai, Vizag, Raipur and Kolkata airports, Mr Sharma said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha. The authority has already decided to outsource the CUDAC facilities at Kolkata, Madurai, Mangalore, Vizag and Raipur airports, latest by March 31.
About security issues, the Minister said AAI had on October 22, received anonymous calls claiming that certain AI flights would be targeted.
Accordingly, security measures were reviewed and beefed up at Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Kochi airports.
