Govt not to compensate business losses

SRINAGAR, Sept 22: The Government today said that they can’t compensate the business houses for their losses as they are covered by Insurances policies and can be compensated by these companies.
In reply to the notice issued by the Jammu and Kashmir High Court to the Government, it said: “…with regard to stores in commercial complexes and the shops, it is submitted that they are covered by Insurance policies and the same can be compensated by concerned insurance companies. However, despite the insurance cover Chief Minister has taken the matter with Government of India to impress upon all insurance companies to expedite the assessment of loss by deputing the surveyors at the earliest.”
In the meantime, Jammu and Kashmir High Court today issued show cause notice to all major Insurance Companies operating in the State to show cause as to why the formula implemented in calamity hit areas like Uttarakhand should not be applied in the State.
The Division Bench of the High Court comprising Chief Justice M M Kumar and Justice A M Magrey today issued notices to the Insurance Companies to appear before the court in a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by the Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry seeking issuance of interim relief for the flood affected in Kashmir. The KCC&I seeks Uttarakhand type of formula for settling insurance claims of flood victims of Jammu and Kashmir.
To ensure immediate relief to the business community, the Bench also issued notices to the lawyers representing various insurance companies to appear before the court.
The companies have been directed to file their replies to the court notices by September 24.
