SRINAGAR, May 10: N.N Vohra, Governor and Usha Vohra, First Lady, visited Vasanta Girls High School, situated at Sheetal Nath here.
The Governor lauded the role being played by the Women’s Welfare Trust in promoting the cause of female education in the Valley. He said that the ever since, nearly a century ago, Annie Besant laid the foundation stone of this school, both the Vasanta and Kashyapa Schools have come a very long way in spreading education in Srinagar, particularly among the economically weaker sections of the society.
The Governor said that today, fortunately, very high importance is being devoted to educating the girl child and the Right to Education Act now prescribes fundamental right status to the provision of education to one and all.
Appreciating the high quality of the cultural programme presented by the students and the staff of both schools, the Governor announced provision of financial support of Rupees 50,000 to the Women’s Welfare Trust for further promoting cultural activities in the schools.
The Governor also presented Gauri Koul scholarships, sponsored by Dr. U.Koul in the memory of his late mother, to three meritorious students who had achieved the top positions at the Secondary School Examinations. The Governor, on the occasion, announced that financial support would be provided to the Trust to award three more scholarships to the meritorious students of both the schools.
The Governor also assured Dr. Girija Dhar, Chairperson of Women’s Welfare Trust that appropriate financial support would be provided to ensure that both the schools function satisfactorily.
On the occasion, the First Lady unveiled an Annual Debate Rolling Trophy instituted by the Trust.
The welcome address was presented by Dr. Girija Dhar, President, Women’s Welfare Trust.
Members of the Trust and Farooq Khan, Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, were among those present on the occasion.
