Governor inaugurates Post Office Summit; gives away Dak Sewa Awards

JAMMU, Mar 18: Governor N. N. Vohra today inaugurated the Post Office Summit and gave away Dak Sewa Awards for 2011 and 2012 at a function organized by the Department of Posts, J&K Circle, at the Police Auditorium here today.
The awardees included 19 functionaries of the Department of Posts, J&K Circle, and two Post Offices, for providing commendable services to the people.
The Governor inaugurated the Post Office Summit by lighting the ceremonial lamp. The Governor, who was the chief guest at the function, highlighted the importance of Post Offices and observed that Indian Postal Department is among the oldest organizations in the country which has for decades provided valuable services to the people, particularly those living in the remote and difficult parts of the country.
He added that more than half a century ago, when there were very few bank branches, particularly in the far-flung and remote areas, people were availing the services of Post Offices for their various requirements as well as for making investments of their savings. He observed that many of the Small Savings Schemes are still available with the Post Offices, from which the people can benefit. He emphasized the need for introducing modern technology and upgrading logistics to bring continuing improvements in the functioning of Post Offices, particularly in the rural areas.
Referring to Jammu and Kashmir, the Governor observed that the Postal Department has been doing very well, particularly ever since  John Samuel took over as Chief Postmaster General, J&K Circle.
The Governor interacted with the awardees and congratulated them for winning the Awards.
The Governor was presented a memento by John Samuel, Chief Postmaster General, J&K Circle, on this occasion.
Earlier, speaking on the occasion,  Samuel said that the J&K Circle was awarded for achieving the second highest growth in Speed Post in the country last year. He stated that this Circle achieved overall 20% growth last year which is likely to be 50% during this year. He said that those who received the Dak Sewa Awards today include five women and two physically challenged employees of the department.
In his welcome address,  Amit Sharma, Director Finance, Postal, J&K Circle, gave details of the achievements of the Department in the State.
Later, a panel discussion was organized on the topic “Post Office Transformation”.
Prof M P Singh Ishar, Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu was the chairperson while as A K Thatai, Income Tax Commissioner, O P Sharma, President J&K Bank, Jammu Zone, Prof Neelu Rohmetra of Business School, University of Jammu, Hemla Aggarwal, Principal Government College for Women, Parade were the panelists.
Prominent among others present on the occasion were Amit Sharma, Director Finance, Postal, J&K Circle and Jagdeep Gupta, Director Postal Services, J&K Circle.
