Medical science has advanced considerably and fortunately we in this country are not lagging behind in adopting advance technologies in medical science. Many people make a will donating their eyes after death for implant in a needy person. This is an advanced technology of medial science. In Jammu we had a small unit of eye plant but that did not function properly for lack of adequate machines and equipment as well as the trained staff. At present we do not have an eye bank in the State at any of the hospitals either in Srinagar or in Jammu. It is estimated that 4.000 to 5,000 patients travel to other state annually for eye transplant and related treatment and care. It is a burden for the poor man to travel to other states for eye implantation.
The good news is that the crucial Eye Bank is going to be opened in Government Medical College and Hospital, Jammu from next financial year, most probably from April 1. This will bring cheer to thousands of people who are in need of special eye plant. Actually what has set the ball in motion in this respect is the decision of the High Court asking the Health Department to incept Eye Bank in the Government Medical College strictly in accordance with the norms prescribed for such eye banks. We learn that a sum of 1.5 crore rupees have been sanctioned by the Government for the Eye Bank and preparation are going on war footing to have the structure and necessary equipment installed without loss of time.
