GMC to get ‘Eye Bank’ soon: Dr Dinesh

JAMMU, Sept 11: The Ophthalmology Department of the Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu observed ‘Eye Donation Fortnight’ in the premises of department by apprising the people about importance of eye donation.
Addressing the people including patients, their attendants and general masses, who attended the ‘Eye Donation Fortnight’, Head of Department, Ophthalmology, Dr Dinesh Gupta announced that ‘Eye Bank’ will be shortly established in the Government Medical College.
“Most of the work for establishment of the ‘Eye Bank’ has been completed. The Eye Bank will be shortly set up in the GMC Jammu after which the people can donate their eyes, which would be transplanted among the people without vision and the blind people would be able to see the world,’’ Dr Gupta said.
The people visiting the hospital especially the Eye Department expressed their keenness to donate the eyes and wanted to know by when the ‘Eye Bank’ would be set up and formalities required to donate the eyes.
“Any healthy person can pledged eye after death,’’ Dr Gupta said, adding after removal of eyes, they are processed and stored in the ‘Eye Bank; and later used for corneal transplantation. This way, one person can help two persons see the world,’’ the HoD Ophthalmology said.
