JAMMU, Sept 10: The Ophthalmology Department of Government Medical College organised an eye donation pledge which concluded today under the National Programme for Control of Blindness.
Due to the efforts of Dr. Dinesh Gupta HoD Ophthalmology, the fortnight long eye donation camp was marked with several events that were successfully held in the Medical College,OPD for public awareness
Many people who wanted to donate their eyes or even wanted corneal replacement came to attend the camp during the fortnight at Medical College Ophthalmology OPD.
The main objective of this eye donation fortnight was to create mass public awareness and to bridge the gap between demand and supply of cornea, Dr Gupta said.
He hoped that due to this camp, people will make eye donation as a family tradition.
“In our country it is estimated that about 20000 new cases of corneal blindness are added every year. Majority of the blind persons are young and their sights could be restored only by corneal replacement, he said.
“Therefore, there is a need to create awareness among the public about  the preventive aspects of corneal blindness and to come forward to pledge their eyes for donation after death, he added.
