JAMMU, Jan 17: The ‘Curtain Raiser Ceremony’ of 2nd Convocation of Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu was held today in the office complex of Principal and Dean, GMC Jammu, Professor Dr Ghanshyam Dev.
While speaking on the occasion, Dr Ghanshyam briefed the media persons about the objects and various aspects of the Convocation. He said the Convocation shall be inaugurated by chief guest, Prof RD Sharma, working Vice Chancellor of JU, on January 20, 2015 at 11 am in the Medical College Auditorium.
“In the Convocation, the pass out medical graduates of 2013 who completed their internship in 2014 shall be awarded degrees while six toppers shall be conferred medals. The parents of the medical graduates to be honoured with degrees have also been invited in the Convocation. Till today, about 63 MBBS graduates have got enrolled for the award of degrees”, disclosed Principal, GMC.
He further said, “In the Convocation, every newly registered medical graduate shall undertake pledge or declaration of ‘Hippocratic Oath’ which is adopted by Medical Council of India (MCI) as code of medical ethics”. He added that about 11 committees of HoDs have been constituted to make the Convocation successful.
Dr Ghanshyam further revealed that the very purpose of the holding such Convocations is to encourage the medical students to work hard and become good doctors to serve the society. Moreover, this way the juniors also learn from their seniors to develop in them a sense of hard work and dedication towards the MCI, he added.
On a query, Dr Ghanshyam told media persons that Convocation as a routine was being organized by University of Jammu (JU) but due to overburdening of the university such Convocations could not be held on regular basis and so in view of this, GMC Jammu started a process of holding its own convocations to honour the medical graduates.
He informed that the 1st Convocation of GMC Jammu was held in the year 2010 but due to certain unavoidable circumstances, the process could not be continued. “However, henceforth it shall be ensured that the convocations are held on regular basis every year”, Dr Ghanshyam added.
Prof (Dr) Bhupesh Khajuria, HoD, Forensic Medicine (Nodal Officer, Media and Publicity Wing of Convocation) and Prof (Dr) Bella Mahajan, HoD, Co-ordinator of Convocation Committees, were also present on the occasion.
