SRINAGAR, May 23: The Medical Council of India (MCI) has granted permission to the newly created Government Medical College (GMC), Baramulla to start functioning from academic years 2019-20 with the intake capacity of 100 seats.
The MCI in a letter addressed to the Principal GMC Baramulla, Dr Javed Choudrey, said that the members of the expert group have come to the conclusion that the letter of permission may be issued for obtaining certain essential documents in order to formally issue the letter of permission.
“After careful consideration of the scheme and taking into consideration the compliance verification assessment report along with the summary/ observations of the member of the undergraduate expert group appointed by the Board of Governors and an undertaking of the Principal Secretary Health and Medical Education…the Board of Governors has come to conclusion that a letter may be issued for obtaining certain essential documents in connection with issuance of letter of permission for establishment of new Medical College at Baramulla, with annual intake of 100 students,” the letter reads.
The letter has highlighted few points and has sought compliance in shape of documents and undertakings with regard to these points from the administration of the college. “The applicant should provide all infrastructural facilities in terms of teaching and non-teaching staff building. Equipments hospital facilities as per Medical Council of India norms,” it reads.
“No students should be admitted in the course till the formal permission of the Board of Governors in supersession of Medical Council of India is granted.”
The letter has made the point 3 as the basis of the grant of letter of permission which is; “Medical colleges/ institutions governed by the State Govt are required to furnish an undertaking to provide funds in their budget till the facilities are fully provided as per time bound programme indicated by them.”
The letter has mentioned that the action to grant formal permission of the Board of Governors in supersession of Medical Council of India for establishment of new Medical College at Baramulla, “will be initiated on the receipt of a compliance report fulfilling the conditions enumerated in paragraph three above,” which is the point regarding budget.
“The Government Medical College (s) except those located in J&K should give an undertaking authorizing Medical Counseling Committee (MCC), Directorate General of health services, ministry of health and family welfare, Government of India to include 15 per cent of MBBS seats in all India quota seats for the year 2019-20,” the letter further reads.
