GMC Baramulla collects over 11000 units of blood in 6 yrs

Referrals stand at 4000 every year since 2018

Srinagar, Apr 15: Government Medical College (GMC), Baramulla, has collected over 11,000 units of blood in the last nearly 6 years, establishing itself as the major blood collection center in northern Kashmir.
As per details available with Excelsior, from the year 2018-19, 11,797 units of blood have been collected by the blood center of GMC, Baramulla, of which 11,059 units have been transfused as per the needs of the patients.
The higher number of blood units transfused and collected in all these years has been recorded in 2023-24, during which 3,889 units of blood were collected and at the same time, 3,641 units of blood were transfused.
Previously, as per available details, in the year 2018-19, 1,237 units of blood were collected and 1,008 were transfused during the one-year period. At the same time, during 2019-20 at GMC Baramulla, 1,631 units of blood were collected, with 1,484 transfused.
In 2020-21, which recorded the lowest collection and transfusion of the blood units, 982 units of blood were collected, and 975 units were transfused to the patients.
However, from 2021-22, the overall collection and transfusion of the blood witnessed a jump at GMC Baramulla, bringing the collection of blood in 2021-22 to 1,587 and 1,503 as blood units transfused during the year.
Further, the details show that during the year 2022-23, the increase in the collection of the blood and its transfusion continued, bringing the collection of blood units to 2,471 and 2,447 as units of blood transfused to patients throughout the year.
Officials told Excelsior that the Blood Center at GMC Baramulla is working efficiently and that it is the only center in the entire north Kashmir where the component separation is done.
With regard to the component separation done at the Blood Center, the official data states that the collection consists of 2,445 units of PRBC, 2,430 units of FFP, 457 units of platelets, and 1,444 Whole Blood units.
At the same time, the blood components that have been issued include 2,062 units of PRBC, 85 units of FFP, 40 platelets, and 1,455 Whole Blood Units.
Meanwhile, with regard to the referrals of patients from different hospitals to GMC Baramulla, the number has remained the same-near 4,000 marks-since 2018-19 till 2023-24.
The numbers state that a total number of 4,237 patients were referred to GMC Baramulla from different hospitals in northern Kashmir, 4,174 in 2019-20.
The numbers spiked in the year 2020-21 with GMC Baramulla witnessing a total number of 6,775 referrals from different hospitals.
In the following years, due to various measures and directives issued by the authorities, the number returned to the 4,000 ranges. In the year 2021-22, 4,027 referrals were seen, 4,743 in the year 2022-23, and 4,250 in 2023-24.
