JAMMU, Feb 17: Department of Biochemistry, Government Medical College, Jammu today announced start of specialized Biochemical investigations like Biochemical estimation of Thyroid hormones, cancer markers like PSA, Markers for various infectious diseases along with advanced tests like HBA1C and cardiac markers in the clinical laboratory of Super Specialty Hospital, Jammu.
HoD Biochemistry Dr A S Bhatia said it was a long pending demand of the people, which has been fulfilled with active support of Medical Education Minister Taj Mohi-ud-Din, who during his recent visit to the GMC Jammu had permitted the department to conduct specialized investigations on the analogue of the GMC Srinagar.
“The poor people of the region will be benefited the most as they will get the state of art technology in the Government run hospital. The results of these tests will be available on the same day of next morning,’’ Dr Bhatia said, adding that the poor patients visiting the hospital will not have to spend huge amount in getting these investigations done from outside the hospital.
Dr Bhatia added that these investigations will be done at the cost at par with the GMC Srinagar. Presently, more than eight lakh investigations are being done in the clinical Biochemistry laboratories in the hospital, which is three times more than the year 2007-08, which shows increasing faith of the people in these laboratories.
Dr Bhatia said a surveillance team has been constituted to monitor quality of the tests being done in the laboratories following the complaint of CPM MLA MY Tarigami yesterday.
The surveillance team comprised Dr Rachna Sabarwal, Dr Aashima Badyal for GMC hospital laboratory, Kapila Raina, Lakhbir Singh for Emergency Biochemistry Clinical Lab and Anil Kumar, Dr Arun Dev Singh and Dr Zulfikar for SMGS Hospital.
Dr Bhatia, a noted Medical Biochemist of international repute and first Medical Graduate to have done medical expertise in the field of clinical Biochemistry in J&K, has urged the Government to provide sufficient funds or permit the departments to have revolving funds to improve existing infrastructure of the clinical laboratories.
