Glad audience is getting aware about Marathi cinema: Gashmeer

NEW DELHI:  Actor Gashmeer Mahajani, best known for his work in Marathi films like “Carry On Maratha” and “Deool Band”, says he is happy to see people taking interest in Marathi cinema nowadays, which was not the case earlier.

The star, who is also excited for his new Hindi film “Dongri Ka Raja” alongside Ronit Roy, Ashmit Patel and Reecha Sinha, believes that Marathi films have always been good but the audience did not care to watch them earlier because of the lack of support from the people in the film industry.

“Marathi cinema is doing really well. And, it’s a good sign that a lot of Marathi artistes are also coming to Bollywood.

“But rather than saying Marathi cinema is doing very well I would say that the audience is getting more and more aware about Marathi movies and they are willing to go to the theatres to watch Marathi movies now,” Gashmeer said.

The actor believes that had the directors and producers invested more on the content of the movies there, the Marathi film industry would have been equal to the cinema of South by now.

“I’ve been working in Marathi cinema for four-and-a-half years now. If the audience for Marathi cinema was taken seriously by the industry people and had they invested in the content I feel we would have been at the level of Tamil or Telegu cinema as far as the regional cinema is concerned,” he said.

When asked whether the transition from Marathi to Hindi films was difficult for him, Gashmeer said, “I don’t consider it a transition. Language doesn’t matter to me be it Hindi, Bengali or Telegu, the only thing which matters is that I’m still working and acting in movies. So there’s no transition.”

Gashmeer does not want to think about the box office results of “Dongri Ka Raja”.

Produced by P S Chhatwal via Filmy Keeda Productions, the film hit theatres today.

“I’ve removed myself out from that thing (hit or flop). For me, the only important thing is the process of making the film. And, also if you start worrying about what response you’re going to get from that moment being in front of the camera and enjoying doesn’t excite you.”

Directed by Hadi Ali Abrar, the film is based on love story of an underworld Raja of Dongri. The Story is set against the backdrop of the Dongri underworld.

The movie is facing competition from “Rock On 2” but Chhatwal said he is not worried as their film is strong in content. (AGENCIES)
