General insurance companies have to pay hundreds of crores as liability to flood victims

JAMMU, Oct 1: The Public Sector General Insurance Companies (GICs) have to pay hundreds of crores of rupees as liability against the insurance claims of the flood victims in the State.
The four general insurance companies i.e New India Insurance Company, United India Insurance Company, National Insurance Company and Oriental Insurance Company which organized three days mega camp in capital cities of Jammu and Srinagar for flood related insurance claims have received thousands of claims so far from the flood hit people of the State. However the maximum claims have been reported from Kashmir Valley that too in Srinagar city which was ravaged by flash floods completely.
The camp which started on September 29 was to culminate today. But after,  large number of complaints were received in Kashmir Valley during the last three days, the authorities of the public Sector Insurance companies have decided to extend the camp by one more day.
Among the general Insurance companies the United Insurance has alone to pay about Rs 400 crore as liability against the insurance claims to flood victims in Kashmir Valley.  This was stated by Dr Nazir Sheikh a senior officer of United Insurance Company. He said his company has so far received 2500 cases from the clients and it expects to receive 500 cases more in future. With this the liability may also increase, he added.
During the last three days of the camp 200 claims were received by the company, he said, adding 950 claims were received in total by all general insurance companies in the camp.
The National Insurance Company Ltd has received 2200 insurance claims so far and it also expects that about 500 claims will still come. Informing this, V K Anand Senior Divisional Manger NICL, Srinagar said that despite the problems faced by the company in flood ravaged Srinagar, its employees are working round the clock to settle the claims of the people. As there is no electricity and no networking system, our employees framed manual cheques to settle the claims at an earliest.
He said the general insurance companies have given special relaxation in settling the insurance claims to flood hit people in the State and this relaxation will continue. Though the claimants will not be asked to complete formalities but after submitting their claims survey of the house, shop or vehicle will be conducted for settling the claim, he added.
Oriental Insurance Company has received 375 claims so far in Kashmir Valley and its liability in comparison to other companies will be less. This was stated by M L Sharma Divisional Manager Oriental Insurance Company Srinagar. He said after intimation by the clients the survey will be conducted to settle the claim.
However the Life Insurance Company has settled the both insurance claims of flood victims received by it so far. This was stated by Fayaz Ahmed Nazir, Nodal officer LIC Srinagar. Rs 5,28,205 were paid as claim in these two cases, he added.
He said the LIC will conduct the camp after Eid as it has only received two claims of flood victims so far and the company is on look out for others. In case other claims will come we will settle them on war footing, he added.
However, LIC has conducted such a camp at Jammu, he said.
During the three days camp in Jammu New India Assurance has received 16 claims. This was stated by Mrs Suman Gupta, Senior Divisional Manager of the company. She said on account payment was also made in three cases while National Insurance Company received four cases today for settlement of claim today. Sawtantar Kumar Ghai, Development Officer Administration said some claims were given in office already by the clients. Oriental Insurance has received seven cases in Jammu during the three days camp and they were submitted to higher authorities for settlement said Ramesh Chander Sharma one of its officers during the camp.
The United India Insurance Company has received six cases during the camp at Jammu.
