General House of JMC expresses concern over poor water, power supply

JAMMU, June 11: The General House Meeting of Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) here today expressed concern over the poor water and power supply in the city.
As the House started its business in the morning, the Councillors, one after another, highlighted that their Wards were reeling under severe water and power crisis.
BJP Councillor, Sanjay Baru of Ward 41 expressed resentment that the water crisis in the city touched peak since the JMC took control of certain divisions of Jal Shakti Department.
He suggested that illegal water connections and wrong use of motors should be stopped.
He was supported by many other Councilors who too expressed the same concern and the issue of power cuts was also raised in the House.
The concerned Executive Engineers tried to satisfy the Councillors by saying that certain works are awaiting funds.
They claimed that the department was making efforts to ensure proper water supply to the public.
Congress Chief Whip in the House, Dwarka Chowdhary who is Councilor of Ward 46 said that five tube wells in his Ward should be put on special feeder from the local power line as earlier these were on special feeder. On this the Mayor, Chander Mohan Gupta after directing the officers said that the same will be done soon.
Another BJP Councillor, Gurmeet Kour Randhawa of Ward 69 said that switches of street lights are of very poor quality and gets damaged after some days only. She demanded that good quality switches should be used for street lights.
Independent Councillor, Prof. Yudhvir Singh of Ward 73 demanded handing over of two non-functional tube wells in his Ward to Jal Shakti Department over which the JMC Commissioner said that they will talk to the Irrigation Department in that regard as the tube wells were of Irrigation Department.
BJP Councillor, Gopal Gupta of Ward 5 demanded shifting of garbage dumping point from the entrance of historical and revered Peer Kho temple to somewhere else and claimed that a resolution for the same was also passed by the House to which the Mayor in his reply said that the dumping point will not be shifted till some alternate place is found.
Rajinder Sharma of BJP raised the issue of enforcement wing of JMC harassing shopkeepers in old city and said that instead of lifting the goods kept outside shops the JMC should facilitate traffic diversion so that only pedestrians may enter narrow streets where such shops exist in the old city.
A resolution by Sham Lal Basson, Independent Councillor of Ward 48 regarding naming a park near new Basti Bahu Fort after Hony Capt Ashok Kumar-a gallantry award winner who killed 13 militants and got Sena Medal was passed.
Some other resolutions were also passed.
