VISAKHAPATNAM, July 18: Five persons were arrested after ‘ganja’ worth Rs 1.27 crore was seized from a vehicle near a village here, police said today.
The Rolugunta and Narsipatnam town police seized the contraband, weighing about 1,060 kgs and packed in 36 gunny bags, late last night from a vehicle near Nindugonda village, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Narsipatnam, Vishal Gunni said.
The ganja (cannabis), reportedly procured from Visakhapatnam agency area and parts along Andhra-Odisha border, was being transported from BB Patnam area of Rolugunta to parts of Tamil Nadu via Narsipatnam, he said.
Acting on a tip-off, police patrolling teams were alerted to intercept the vehicle.
While five drug peddlers were arrested from the spot, nine others, including the vehicle driver, fled after noticing the police teams.
A case has been registered against the accused under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, police added. (PTI)
