SRINAGAR, Feb 14: A meeting of senior citizens, lawyers, academicians, religious heads and representatives of various political parties was organized at the district headquarter Ganderbal today over proposed shifting of the Central University Kashmir from Ganderbal.
The residents of Ganderbal have opposed the Government’s proposal to shift the CUK and said that any such move will be resisted by them and warned that they will come on roads to protest any such move.
“Whole Ganderbal district will come on roads if Central University of Kashmir will be shifted from here,” Peer Ghulam Mohammad, Imam Jamia Central Masjid Ganderbal said.
The locals alleged that they are apprehensive that the CUK might meet the same fate as of Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) in a well planned conspiracy.
As per locals, in 2002, the residents of Ganderbal were enthusiastic after then National Conference Government had announced that Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) will come up in Ganderbal district. Even the land was identified it. But surprisingly in 2005 when People’s Democratic Party (PDP) was in power, the Government reversed the decision of the previous Government and announced that Islamic University which will be the first of its kind in Kashmir will be established at Awantipora in South Kashmir.
“We won’t let it repeat this time. Any proposal to shift Central University from Ganderbal is unacceptable and we will resist it every level”, Advocate Umer Wani, said.
Senior National Conference leader and MLA Ganderbal, Sheikh Ishfaq Jabar in his address said he will resign from the State Assembly if CUK is shifted from Ganderbal.
