NEW DELHI,  Sept 28: Addressing the  Annual Conference of Research Society for Study of Diabetes in India (RSSDI) Delhi Chapter as Chief Guest here today, Dr. Jitendra Singh,Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences, MoS in PMO, DoPT, Pensions, Grievances, Atomic Energy and Space, said that the future focus of the entire medical research in the next two decades will be on prevention and, if possible, radical cure of diabetes, particularly in the young and the pregnant women.
With more than 65% of country’s population  below the age of 35 years, Dr. Jitendra Singh said that increase in rise of Type-2 Diabetes Mellitus is not only a huge health challenge for the nation, but also threatens to eat away the vitals of the country’s youth potential at its prime.
Dr. Jitendra Singh said that on the one hand, Diabetes at young age poses a challenge for the person affected and his family, because young age is the most formative and productive phase of life and the detection of  diabetes at this age causes unwarranted distraction, although with good level of diabetes education and self-discipline, a diabetic can infact lead a better and more productive life than his non-diabetic peers. On the other hand, Dr. Jitendra Singh added that diabetes in young also poses a challenge for treating clinician or Diabetologist who has to ensure that the person is able to live for the remaining three or four decades of life without being adversely affected by any of the chronic complications for which it becomes mandatory to ensure a constant strict control of blood sugar levels.
Referring to diabetes in pregnancy, Dr. Jitendra Singh said that if we are able to prevent the occurring of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus, this may prevent the generation to generation transmission of the disease and thus also help in controlling the rapid spread of diabetes epidemic in the Indian sub-continent.
Dr. Jitendra Singh said that as a part of the Union Government, he will also take up with the other concerned Ministries the issue of huge medical burden posed because of the cost and expenditure accrued from lifelong treatment to be taken for diabetes. While the Central Government employees are being granted this facility, in many of the States the reimbursement for lifelong treatment of diabetes is only available up to the time of superannuation which is an anomaly,he observed.
Also present on the occasion were Dr. Samar Banerjee National President  RSSDI, Dr V.Mohan National Past President RSSDI,Dr. S.V. Madhu National President-elect RSSDI,  Dr. Rajeev Chawla National Secretary, Dr. B.M. Makkar National Treasurer and Chairman  Delhi chapter of RSSDI .
