JAMMU, July 15: Samaj Sudhar Committee (SSC), Simbal Camp, while condemning another shameful incident of denial to cremation of COVID-19 victim’s body in Shastri Nagar, said that a decent burial/cremation is a fundamental right of every citizen of this country guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution and it cannot be denied under the garb of protests.
Discussing the issue in a meeting of the committee held under the chairmanship of Gurcharan Singh (chairman of the committee), the committee members said a victim of corona virus hailing from Simbal Camp breathed his last yesterday at the Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu and authorities at their own and without consulting local inhabitants/ Panchayat took the body of the deceased in Shastri Nagar Cremation Ground where committee of Shastri Nagar Cremation Ground put the lock on the door and did not allow cremation.
They said the denial of cremation to COVID-19 victims’ bodies is a heinous crime as per law also. The SSC members said that Government authorities from R S Pura at their own decided to cremate the deceased at Shastri Nagar while members of the Panchayat/local inhabitants of Simbal Camp had not objected to cremation of the deceased at RS Pura.
The SSC members demanded Divisional Commissioner Jammu to order enquiry as who from R S Pura circulated fake news regarding denial of cremation in Simbal Camp.
Gurucharan Singh said that State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) authorities should issue orders that the last rites of a person be conducted in dignified manner in the cremation grounds of their respective areas.
