NEW DELHI: Sports associations across the country maintain full transparency in the selection of players at the local level, Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju told the Lok Sabha on Thursday. He was responding to a supplementary query of Bahujan Samaj Party Member Shyam Singh Yadav during the Question Hour. Mr Yadav alleged dishonesty in the selection of players at the local level. Countering him, the Minister said that under the ‘Khelo India’ scheme, the local talent is identified and the budding sportspersons are admitted to the Sports Authority of India (SAI) centers, where training is provided to them, apart from the stipends. The authorities’ focus solely on improving the players’ ability, Mr Rijiju added. He said the sports federations have full freedom in the selection of players, which is carried out without any bias and interference from any quarter. (AGENCIES)
