3 each from leading hotel, IT office, School infected
JAMMU, Nov 23: Fresh spurt was today witnessed in COVID deaths in Jammu region with seven persons including a woman succumbing to the virus and 194 new cases were reported while 214 recovered . A senior IAS officer of Jammu and Kashmir cadre in the rank of Financial Commissioner in J&K has tested positive for the virus and is in isolation in New Delhi.
Meanwhile, health experts have cautioned that blatant violation of COVID guidelines during campaigning by the candidates and leaders of political parties for the District Development Council (DDC) elections besides the marriage functions could lead to further spread of Coronavirus.

“Neither the political leaders and candidates nor the people in the rallies are adhering to COVID protocol. There is no social distancing in the election rallies and no wearing of face masks and use of sanitizers. And all this is happening right under the nose of both civil and police administration which have turned blind eye to all this,” the experts said, adding this could lead to disaster if the administration doesn’t take immediate measures to check violation of COVID guidelines at the election rallies as well as marriage functions where gathering had started swelling.
“Violation of COVID guidelines could be seen in the rallies of all political parties,” they said, adding though police is present in strength in the rallies they make no efforts to enforce COVID guidelines by the candidates as well as their supporters.
Meanwhile, a senior IAS officer of Jammu and Kashmir cadre, who was posted in the Union Territory in the rank of Financial Commissioner, has tested positive for COVID-19 and is in isolation in New Delhi. He is asymptomatic, sources said, adding he is expected to return here after testing negative.
BJP Rajya Sabha MP Shamsher Singh Manhas and his wife also tested positive for Coronavirus today. While Manhas has been kept in home isolation, his wife was admitted in the GMC Jammu as she is symptomatic.
Nearly 50 persons today tested positive for COVID-19 during Rapid Antigen Testing (RAT) in Jammu district.
They include three each from Hotel Radisson Blu, Income Tax Office Rail Head Complex and Shiksha Niketan School Jeevan Nagar, 13 from Domana, four Janipura, three Patta Bohri Chowk, two Parade Ground and one each at Shahidhi Chowk and Jewel Chowk.
Meanwhile, Monk of Lamayuru Monastery in Leh district, Konchok Rigzin, 58, today died of Coronavirus at SNM hospital, where he was admitted on November 21.
A 94-year-old man from Phyang in Leh, who was infected by the virus, died at his home.
However, the Union Territory of Ladakh today reported only six new Corona cases, all in Leh taking total cases to 7945 including 859 active positives and 6985 recoveries.
Following spurt in Corona cases in Leh, the district administration has declared six more areas as Containment Zones including five in Leh City besides Skurbuchan village in Khaltsi Sub Division.
A complete shutdown was observed in Leh City and some outskirts on the call given by the Civil Society for voluntary bandh in view of spread of Coronavirus cases across the district besides rising number of deaths due to pathogen.
Meanwhile, out of seven COVID fatalities in Jammu region, three were reported from Udhampur district and two each from Jammu and Samba districts. A 40-year-old woman from village Bassi Khurd in Bari Brahmana area of Samba district died of COVID-19 in the Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu. She was also suffering from hypertension and Type 2 diabetes. Second Corona casualty in Samba district was reported from village Kartholi where 70-year-old man died in Fortis Hospital Amritsar during treatment.
A 75-year-old man from Majalata in Mansar area of Udhampur district, 52-year-old from Udhampur town and 75-year-old from Lehnu Tikri, all in Udhampur district died in the GMC Jammu and District Hospital Udhampur due to COVID-19. The victims from Majalata and Udhampur town were co-morbid.
In Jammu district, two elderly persons succumbed to the virus at their houses in Bakshi Nagar and Gangyal.
Seven more deaths in Jammu region have taken the Corona toll to 562 including 291 in Jammu district, 52 Doda, 49 Rajouri, 42 Udhampur, 35 Kathua, 28 Samba, 22 Poonch, 18 Ramban, 16 Kishtwar and nine in Reasi district.
Among 185 persons who tested positive for the virus today in the region, 98 belonged to Jammu district, 23 Doda, 20 Udhampur, 15 Kishtwar, 10 Ramban, six Samba, four each Reasi and Kathua, three Rajouri and two in Poonch district.
Of 214 persons who recovered from the virus today in the region, Jammu district accounted for maximum 102 followed by Ramban 55, Doda 20, Kathua 14, Udhampur 8, Rajouri 7, Poonch 6 and Kishtwar 2. No recoveries were today reported from Samba and Reasi districts.
Jammu region now has 42572 Corona cases. Among them, 1882 are active positives while 40128 have recovered from the virus and there have been 562 casualties.
