KOLKATA: As Bollywood and Hollywood blockbusters dominate multiplexes in the city, French films are finding a niche audience through single screen theatres.
Under a collaboration between Alliance Française du Bengale, French language and cultural organisation and Basusree theatre French films are screened twice a month usually on the first and third Sundays starting at 10.30 am.
Officials of the French institute said this tie-up has been a real success for the last six months and is part of a two-fold approach – to disseminate quality French cinema and preserve the cultural and architectural heritage of Kolkata.
French cinema, they said, gets very few commercial screenings in Indian halls due to the blockbuster releases from both Bollywood and Hollywood.
This collaboration is also a shot in the arm for independent cinemas which beat a retreat and some even disappeared in the domination by commercial films.
Each session on Sunday brings together an average of 200 cinema-goers, the officials said adding from this Saturday there would be children’s film screenings.
The first film in the series will be ‘Le Père Noël: The Father Christmas’ which is a modern tale narrating the wonderful encounters of a child with a very special Santa Claus. The 90-minute-long film is dubbed in French but comes subtitled in English to ease viewing for children. (AGENCIES)
