WEST BENGAL, Aug 25: Babul Supriyo, Minister of State for Urban Development and Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation, Government of India, today said that the ESI Corporation was committed to work for the welfare of workers.
He was addressing the gathering during the foundation stone laying ceremony for extension of ESI Hospital, Asansol, West Bengal.
In order to provide social security benefits and for providing the best medical services to the insured persons and their families of Asansol area, the ESI Corporation decided to extend this existing 100 bedded ESI Hospital to 150 bedded Hospital.
After extension, this Hospital will have all the modern amenities and equipped with state of the art equipments.  It will be a multi-speciality hospital which provides indoor, outdoor, emergency and diagnostic services to the ESI beneficiaries.  The construction cost for extension of the Hospital will be Rs 50 crore.
Babul Supriyo laid the foundation stone in the presence of Chinmay Bose, Regional Director, ESIC, Kolkata, Dr M N Roy, Sr State Medical Commissioner Incharge, West Bengal and A Majumdar, Jt Director Incharge, Sub-Regional Office, ESIC, Durgapur.
Pertinent to mention that the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation is a pioneer Social Security organization providing comprehensive social security benefits like complete Medical Care and a range of Cash Benefits in times of need such as employment injury, sickness, death etc.  The ESI Act applies to premises/precincts where 10 or more persons are employed. The employees drawing wages up to Rs 15,000/- a month are entitled to Health insurance cover and other benefits, under the ESI Act. The Act now applies to over 7.23 lakh factories and establishments across the country, benefiting about 2.03 crores family units of workers. As of now, the total beneficiary population of ESI Scheme stands over 7.89 crores. Ever since its inception in 1952, the ESI Corporation has, so far, set up 151 Hospitals, 1418/140 Dispensaries / ISM Units, 812 Branch/Pay Offices and 61 Regional & Sub-Regional/ Divisional Offices.
