SRINAGAR, Aug 27: A meeting of the Environment Committee of Legislative Assembly headed by MLA Kulgam, M. Y. Tarigami held here today to examine and discuss the various representations received with regard to heavy environmental pollution and establishment of stone crushers and other industries in violation of environmental norms in various areas of Kupwara and Budgam districts.
The Committee which met here with its members including Legislators A .R Veeri, Javaid Mustafa Mir, Mohammad Khalil Bandh, Rafi Ahmad Mir, Durga Dass and Mohammad Ashraf Ganai discussed the issues related to safeguarding the environment of the State.
Threadbare discussion was held on the extraction of stones and sand from Nallahs in Kupwara District, establishment of illegal stone crushers in the area which pose gigantic threat to human health and the environment. The Committee underscored that such activities put negative impact on the environment due to which eco-balance is disturbed and preventive measures have to be taken on war-footing basis to save it.
The Committee urged for formulation of comprehensive strategy for stoppage of environmental degradation, saying that environmental disturbance put adverse impact on human health and natural resources.
The Committee directed the Pollution Control Board and other concerned departments to evaluate and see the impact of such activities in the area and asked to submit the assessment report before the Committee at the earliest. The Committee also decided to pay on-the-spot visit of the area along with the District Administration Kupwara and other concerned departments soon.
The Committee also discussed the representation received with regard to development of illegal residential colonies established on wetlands in some areas of Budgam district and asked the Pollution Control Board, District Administration and other concerned for submission of report within weeks’ time.
The committee also decided to visit Kargil district by the next month to sort out environmental issues of the area.
