Foreign Secy off to Seoul to push India’s NSG entry bid

NEW DELHI: Intensifying its diplomatic offensive to push for India’s entry into the elite Nuclear Suppliers Group(NSG), India today sent its Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar to Seoul where the Group is holding its plenary today and tomorrow.
Confirming that the Foreign Secretary has left for Seoul, sources said he would try to build up a consensus in India’s favour, especially in the face of the Chinese reservations.
The issue of India’s membership is likely to be taken up at the meeting of the 48-member group.
China, which is opposing India’s bid on grounds of New Delhi not signing the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty(NPT), had on Monday said the issue of India’s membership was not all on the agenda of the Seoul meeting but yesterday said that the door was still open for discussion over the issue.
The latest Chinese statement, giving indications of some positive signal came two days ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping at Tashkent where the two will be there tomorrow for the SCO Summit. (AGENCIES)
