JAMMU, Mar 21: A foot bridge would be constructed as a part of temporary solution to the road connectivity problems being faced by the people due to the damage caused to Niki Tawi bridge during last years’ floods.
This decision was taken at a high level meeting attended by Minister for Public Works, Gardens Parks and Floriculture, Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari, Minister for Social Welfare and Forests, Bali Bhagat, Minister for PHE, I&FC, Sukhnandan Kumar, Minister of State for R&B and Revenue, Sunil Kumar Sharma, besides senior officers of R&B, PHE and JKPCC here today.
The decision was taken after a threadbare discussion held with the experts on the issue. The authorities of R&B Department were asked to start work on the foot bridge and ensure that it is completed within three months.
The meeting also decided that a bund would be constructed on the banks of the river Tawi from where its water enters into habitations during rainy season and floods. The Minister issued instructions to the concerned authorities for taking up the job at an earliest in order to mitigate the sufferings of the people being affected by the floods fury and torrential rains.
The MD, JKPCC was asked to accelerate work on the bridge coming up in the area at a cost of Rs. 25 crore and ensure that work is completed within minimum possible time.
Regarding the encroachments on the banks of River Tawi, the authorities of Irrigation and Flood Control were directed to mobilize its men and machinery and demolish all the illegal encroachments.
The Minister for Social Welfare and the Minister for Public Works, Floriculture and Gardens and Parks had visited the site yesterday and took stock of the damage caused to the bridge.
