A lot of damage is caused to areas falling in Nikki Tawi periphery in Jammu annually due to flash floods , the worst damage was caused by the horrible floods of 2014 in Rivers of Tawi and Jehlum .There should have been a mechanism built to prevent any more damage to the affected villages with floods that occasionally visit each year with varying intensity. Yes, some temporary and ad-hoc measures are reportedly resorted to in order to tide over the situation of recurring floods but of no avail except public money in crores of Rupees going down the drain. Fed up with the insensitivity of the administration , a PIL was filed in the High Court.
Despite creation of JehlumTawi Flood Recovery Project (JTFRP) in the year 2016, no improvement in the situation in these villages of Niki Tawi being there and the casual approach of Irrigation and Flood Control Department all has been viewed seriously by the Division Bench of the High Court which has asked for the personal appearance of the Chief Executive Officer of JTFRP on next date of hearing along with the relevant details to be submitted in the court. Non cooperation between different agencies like Central Water Commission, Jammu Development Authority, Irrigation and Flood Control as also the JTFRP has further complicated the matter. Under the supervision and monitoring of the High Court, it is hoped that resolution to the problem would be found.
