Fire Services Week begins, tributes paid to martyrs

JAMMU/SRINAGAR, Apr 14: Fire Service Week, which is observed throughout the country every year April 14 to April 20 in order to make public aware regarding the fire prevention and precautionary measures, began today.
The Commemoration Parades were organized at State, Provincial and District levels and wreaths were laid in memory of martyrs. The main function was held at Fire and Emergency Headquarters Gandhi Nagar wherein Dr G A Bhat, Director General, Fire & Emergency Services was the chief guest.
A two minutes silence was observed in the memory of martyrs. The wreaths were laid on the memorial by Dr G A Bhat, Director General, Fire and Emergency Services, R T Dubey, Joint Director Fire and Emergency Services, Jammu Range, A K Wangoo, Deputy Director Fire and Emergency Services Command Jammu and other senior officers of the department.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Bhat discussed the devastation caused due to fire and floods, the recent example he gave was the devastating flood which struck the State in September 2014 especially in Kashmir Valley which remained submerged for days together.
He complimented the Services for their professional competence, commitment, courage and the distinguished services they exhibited in 4000 fire and rescue calls in 2014 in which property worth Rs 1600 crore was involved and property worth Rs 1430 crore was approximately saved.
He emphasized upon the departmental officers to constitute special teams for giving demonstrations during the week regarding fire safety measures at district level in industrial establishments and other institutions besides conducting essay competitions and debates on this year’s slogan, “To Prevent Fire: Adopt Safe Housekeeping Practices and Approved Electrical Appliances” at Range and District Headquarters.
Fire Service Day was also observed at Fire and Emergency Headquarters Batamaloo Srinagar where R K Hak, Joint Director Fire and Emergency Services Kashmir Range was the chief guest. Wreaths were also laid on the memorial by the seniors officers including M A Dar, Dy Director Fire & Emergency Services Command Srinagar, and other officers.
At Udhampur, P K Bhat, Assistant Director Fire and Emergency Services Command Udhampur/Reasi, laid wreaths at the martyrs memorial.
A fire tender fixed with posters and banners was also made to move through the roads of Udhampur town and general masses were made aware about fire preventive measures. Educational tricks on fire fighting were announced through public address system.
Similar commemoration parades were also held at Fire and Emergency Station Reasi/Katra/Chenani and Ramnagar of Udhampur/Reasi Command.
Fire Service Day was also observed at Fire and Emergency Services District Headquarter Rajouri/Poonch. Wreath ceremony was organized under the supervision of R C Raina, Assistant Director, Fire and Emergency Services Headquarters Rajouri.
